Carrie Watkins, Team Leader
Carrie is a rising senior at Brandeis University in Waltham, Massachusetts studying International and Global Studies and Environmental Studies. She’s originally from Manhattan Beach, California. After returning from a semester in Nepal, she decided that she was done with just sitting around and learning about environmental issues; she needed to do something about them! Not long after this epiphany, an extremely enthusiastic friend by the name of Tali Smookler told her about Climate Summer, and Carrie knew that this was the right thing to do.
Lauren Clapp, New Media Coordinator
Lauren Clapp hails from Norwood, Massachusetts, and is a rising Junior at Elon University in North Carolina. She is studying Human Services and Public Health. She enjoys hiking, recycling, reading the New York Times and visiting modern art museums. Sustainability and caring for the environment have always been an important part of Lauren’s life, but Climate Summer will be her first immersion in environmental activism. She hopes to gain quads of steel this summer, as well as learn the skills, make the connections and find the inspiration to carry over this important work at her school in the fall.
Rayleigh Lei, Outreach and Events CoordinatorRayleigh is a rising junior at Columbia University, studying mathematics. Though this internship has little to do with his major, the low likelihood of federal action and necessity of action while we still can compels Rayleigh to seek to foster local, community-driven responses to climate change to inspire national and international solutions. While he has participated in College Democrats, Roosevelt Institute, and Activist Council, he hopes to apply what he learns over this summer to help build a movement to address climate change in NYC. Rayleigh’s other interests include enjoying college basketball and football, playing viola, and reading.
Maureen McCoy, Movement Narrative Coordinator
Maureen McCoy, a native of New Hartford, NY, is a rising junior at St. Lawrence University and is very involved with both the varsity field hockey and varsity softball teams. She recently declared a combined major of environmental studies and economics, because she sees the future complications in both areas of society. Maureen is excited for the new challenge of biking (and exploring) Massachusetts by bicycle, as well as spreading vital knowledge in the towns she travels to. This is Maureen’s first interlacement with community organizing and activism and thought there could be no better way to spend a summer than addressing an issue she feels passionate about.
Amira Mintz-Morgenthau, Media Coordinator Amira Mintz-Morgenthau is a rising senior at Brandeis University in Waltham, Massachusetts. She is majoring in art history and minoring in environmental science and Hebrew. Amira is originally from New York City and has just come back from studying abroad in Berlin. After doing an internship last summer that involved some environmental action, she decided to acquire a more educational basis before taking more action. She took a course in environmental sustainability, where she led an initiative in “greening” orientation at Brandeis University. She wanted to reach a wider audience, which is why Climate Summer fit well with her goals. Amira is excited to be biking the whole summer, while spreading awareness in order to change environmental policy.
